Kids, Write Your Own Book in December

Young authors, tap into your creativity and write your own book at our Chicago Children’s Book Writing Month events in December. Inspired by NaNoWriMo, we call it ChiChiBoWriMo (pronounced shy-chee-bo-rye-mow).

Do you have a book in your head that you want to put on paper? Is it a children’s novel, an illustrated poetry book, an informational book on your favorite topic or maybe even a comic book? Make it happen this month!

Need some inspiration? Try these prompts to get started, and check out our recommended reads to get your imagination going.

  • Ask a friend to draw a picture that you can write a story about.
  • Imagine what your parents were like as kids and what they might have done to get into trouble.
  • Write about your family's favorite traditions.
  • Think of as many rhyming word pairs as you can in five minutes and use them to write a poem.
  • Take a story you already know and add a new twist to it.
  • Tell a story without any words, just pictures and drawings.
  • Create your own superhero and write the first issue of their comic book.
  • What would your life be like if you lived in the past? The future?
  • If it snowed so much you couldn’t leave your house, what would you do?
  • Write a biography about someone important in your life.
  • Write about something you used to be scared of but can laugh about now.
  • Where would you fly if you had wings?
