Join the celebration of Women's History Month 2016!

Events

The month's events highlight women's contributions to the arts, local history and activism. Join us for health and safety workshops; activist T-shirt making sessions for teens; and book discussions and film screenings that explore issues important to women around the world.

Event highlights include:

Women in Architecture: Sophia Hayden Bennett and Marion Mahony Griffin
6 p.m. Tuesday, March 22 at Harold Washington Library Center
Local architect Susan van der Meulen discusses Sophia Hayden Bennett and Marion Mahony Griffin, both of whom were active in Chicago architecture in the late 19^th and early 20^th centuries.

Celebrating Local Women of History at the Harsh Research Collection
10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, March 26 at Woodson Regional Library
Get a behind-the-scenes tour of the Vivian G. Harsh Research Collection of Afro-American History and Literature at Woodson Regional Library. One of our archivists tells the story of visionary librarian Vivian G. Harsh. View archival artifacts and manuscripts from the collections of three Chicago women: Marjorie Stewart Joyner, Susan Cayton Woodson and the Rev. Addie Wyatt.

Working Women’s Empowerment Workshops
6 p.m. Thursday, March 17 at Garfield Ridge Branch
6 p.m. Wednesday, March 30 at Harold Washington Library Center
Working women cope with multiple stressors, responsibilities and divergent cultural identities. This workshop teaches you to recognize and understand cultural identity, the sense of self that influences a person’s concept of being right or wrong in different situations like work.

Exhibit

Christina Fuentes: Spellbound and Decadence
March 1–31 in the 3^rd floor exhibit cases at Harold Washington Library Center
Christina Fuentes’ giclee prints focus on the female entity, displaying vibrant layers of colors, shapes, patterns and cityscapes incorporated with nature. Fuentes will give an artist talk at 2:30 p.m. Saturday March 26 at Harold Washington Library Center.
